The Mitchell Theatre was a phase two project following on from The Mitchell Library again, sponsored by iGuzzini. The Theatre entrance in Granville Street is particularly grand and is adorned with the most magnificent statues and lanterns.
Part of the works involved refurbishing the lanterns which were in a poor state of repair and badly vandalised. The original intention was to return these to proper gas lanterns using the original mantles that were still in place in the basement but testing showed that the pipework was no longer fit for purpose and would have cost too much to replace. Instead, Lightfolio worked closely with Sugg Lighting to create a faithful reproduction using miniature electric pygmy lamps to replicate the original gas mantles.
The building is illuminated using mainly warm white light with excellent colour rendering. The luminaires are all concealed to minimise their impact and the statues were lit using a special LED projector fitting created by Sugg for the project.
