St Andrews Church was completed in approximately 1747 and was refurbished inside and out approximately 10 years ago by The Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust.
As part of the restoration works an external lighting scheme was always planned but only realised recently due to funding constraints. Lightfolio were engaged to help secure part of this funding through the City Council and were also responsible for the design and delivery of the scheme which covers all four facades, the roofscape and the steeple.
Being Grade A listed, special mounting systems and containment for cabling had to be devised that would restrict fixings to the building itself. In the end we were able to reduce direct fixings to around 5% of what they might have been and avoid the need for a listed building application, which considerably shortened the contract period.
The scheme uses predominantly white light, except within the steeple where a warm, candlelight like glow has been used. The facades are washed with light from ground mounted luminaires whilst at roof level, the ballustrades and Urns are picked out individually creating depth. The steeple and portico below are bathed in a cool white light, and the detailing at the pediment is picked out by a special floodlight called Radius from iGuzzini which creates tremendous depth of relief.
