![]() Stockingfield Junction Location: Maryhill, Glasgow Client: British Waterways
The new three way crossing on The Forth & Clyde Canal at Stockingfield Junction, Maryhill is a truly unique project. The bridge crossing incorporates a 30 metre statue called 'The Big Man' designed by artist Andy Scott which appears to hold up the bridge.Lightfolio were commissioned to design a suitable lighting concept for the project which extends not only to the statue, but to the bridge itself and the approaches to the site. The scheme uses the latest in energy saving technologies and interactive control to deliver a dynamic, kinetic lighting experience for visitors. As pedestrians cross the bridge at night, The Big Man changes colour in specific areas where the human body would experience stress and strains from holding up an object that people walked over, albeit this human form is of goliath proportions.
This project promises to be an internationally renowned piece and carries on the desire of British Waterways to create spectacular visitor attractions along the length of the canal network.
The bridge crossing will also have a positive effect on the locality and complement other regeneration projects being undertaken to revitalise the area. The project is currently with the local planning department awaiting approval.
