![]() Govan Tower Blocks Location: Glasgow Client: Linthouse Housing Association
The lighting scheme for the two opposing tower blocks at Mallaig Road and Mountgarrie Path in Govan was designed to show the movement of people within each building through the linking of colour change light strips mounted around the top of each building to the lift motors. When the lifts are not in use the lighting also gives a representation through colour change, of windspeed and air temperature in the locale.
The scheme had to be almost entirely self supporting as no fixings into the roof membranes were permitted. The strips themselves are LED based and draw only a tiny amount of power yet they are capable of producing a myriad of colours that can be seen over several miles.
The people who live in the towers were particularly pleased that their neighbourhood had been marked out in this way as it was now easily recognisable on the skyline.
Despite this being a fairly intricate system with many sensors and pieces of equipment, the project as a whole was not expensive and the lighting has worked without fault on a daily basis for several years.
There is a 'project showcase' available for download from the menu on the right of this page which gives more information about the project should you require it.
